Tibetan Women’s Writing Program
Machik is committed to supporting the voices of Tibetan women, particularly those writing in the Tibetan language. Through our support of Professor Palmo Tso – scholar, poet and women’s advocate — we have sponsored the development and distribution of several landmark print and online publications: the first ever anthology of Tibetan women’s writing, the first print newsmagazine – The Land of Snow Tibetan Women’s Journal – on Tibetan women’s affairs, and an online forum for Tibetan women. It costs USD $1,000 per year to publish The Land of Snow Tibetan Women’s Journal.
Sholung: An Anthology of Tibetan Women’s Voices
Sholung (bZho lung) is the first ever anthology of contemporary Tibetan women’s writing to appear in any language. We are pleased that this historic collection gathers the voices of women writing exclusively in Tibetan. Through the efforts of editor and impresario, Palmo Tso, Sholong opened a new creative space for Tibetan women poets and essayists from across the plateau. The collection was published in 2005 with the financial support of Machik.
Snowland Tibetan Women’s Journal
Machik sponsored the development of the first ever women’s quarterly magazine, Snowland Tibetan Women’s Journal (Gangs can skyes ma’i tshags par). Edited and produced by Tibetan women, this magazine provides a unique and dynamic forum for Tibetan women writers to discuss compelling social issues such as the impact of HIV/AIDS on Tibetan women. Twelve issues have been produced since the journal was launched in December 2004. Machik also sponsored the development of the first online space devoted to Tibetan women writers writing in Tibetan.
Through our Tibetan Women’s Writing Program, we are not only opening new spaces for Tibetan women voices, we are also supporting the creative use of the Tibetan language. Please contact us directly to learn more about this program and how you can contribute.
