Gender Equity
We work to grow gender equity for Tibet by creating new platforms to amplify voices of marginalized people, especially for those who identify as women and non-binary. We also work with allies on promoting healthy masculinity and addressing gender inequity in all forms.

Our Approach
Gender equity is in our organizational DNA
Strong communities begin with equal access to resources and opportunities for all. That is why Machik from the start has been committed to investing in the education of Tibetan women and girls, especially from rural areas. One of our main priorities is to innovate ways to level the structural inequities in Tibetan society.
We have pursued these goals not only through specific programs that address the special needs of Tibetans identifying as women – projects such as midwifery training – but also through longer term efforts to plant seeds for gender equity in community leadership. In addition to having insisted on more than 50% girls enrollment of the Chungba Primary and Middle Schools and the Summer Enrichment Program, Machik created the Mother’s Wish Foundation to support education for over 2,000 girls and women from low-income rural families from middle school to PhDs. Based on the same values, our current approach on gender equity is to grow new spaces for the global conversation among Tibetans, Chinese, and global citizens. |
Machik helped usher in two landmark moments in the history of Tibetan women’s writing. In 2005, we sponsored the publication of the first ever anthology of contemporary Tibetan women’s writing to appear in any language. We also sponsored the development of the first Tibetan women’s quarterly magazine. Edited and produced by Tibetan women, in the Tibetan language, the Snowland Tibetan Women’s Journal created a new space for women’s voices.
