Machik Gender Summit
The Machik Gender Summit (MGS) is a unique space to grow a new safe space and community of care, support, and empowerment for all Tibetans who are cisgender women, transgender women and non-binary people. Knowing that gender inequity is a deep seated challenge worldwide, we have been committed to the values of gender equity and shared power since our work began over 20 years ago. The MGS creates a much needed safe space to share experiences and strengthen our resolve to build a future that fully values and respects all gender identities in Tibetan society. We believe that frank, intergenerational and inclusive conversations will move us toward understanding, healing and action. The first MGS took place in Washington DC in 2018, the second in New York City in 2019 and in 2020, for the first time, we hosted the MGS online to welcome our global Machik community of Tibetans and allies to participate. Topics have included gender based violence, reproductive rights, motherhood, choice to be child-free, education, LGBTQIA+, representation and power, literature, the arts, and so on.
