What We Do
|
Machik grows a global community committed to a
stronger future for Tibet.
stronger future for Tibet.
Machik has grown organically around an effort to build a community-based education project from the ground up in one rural Tibetan township. At the heart of the work have been direct interventions – building an award-winning school, providing clean energy and safe drinking water, establishing a library and an organic greenhouse, repairing roads and rebuilding homes, facilitating healthcare missions and caring for the elderly and the poor. As our work has grown, we have broadened its impact by establishing women’s education programs and by investing in training programs and digital media projects as well as in dynamic individuals who embody the ideals of community service, learning, and social entrepreneurship. Drawing on a commitment to fieldwork and a respect for local knowledge, culture and tradition, Machik has charted new pathways for revitalizing local communities and for strengthening Tibetan capacity. Over time, these efforts have enabled us to create a portal for developing new partnerships and synergies on a regional scale. With the support of a growing circle of volunteers, partners and grassroots supporters, Machik’s work has gathered a community of people – local, regional and global – who share a vision of hope for a strong, healthy and vibrant Tibetan future. At the end of the day, Machik’s work is about enabling meaningful social change, one heart at a time. We hope you will join us in this effort.
We develop new opportunities for Tibet through these programs:

Highlights
From Students to Teachers
Many of the students who entered the first class of the Chungba Primary School in 2002 are now teachers at the Chungba Schools and in schools across Tibet. Coming full circle in this way has been a key goal and outcome of Machik’s work supporting Tibetan language education for communities in Tibet.

Khabda: Global Learning for Tibet
Khabda in Tibetan means an informal chat or conversation. In the spirit of transgressing the boundaries between contemporary Tibet and the global context, Machik Khabda is a platform for local communities world-wide to explore books, film, art, music and other Tibetan cultural forms emerging from inside Tibet today.
