Feminist Text Translations
Machik is committed to supporting the voices of Tibetan women, particularly those writing in the Tibetan language.  Machik helped usher in two landmark moments in the history of Tibetan women’s writing. In 2005, we sponsored the publication of Sholung, the first ever anthology of contemporary Tibetan women’s writing to appear in any language.  We also sponsored the development of the first Tibetan women’s quarterly magazine. Edited and produced by Tibetan women, in the Tibetan language, the Snowland Tibetan Women’s Journal created a new space for women’s voices. Both publications were created and edited by Professor Palmo Tso. In this way, we not only opened new spaces for Tibetan women voices, we also support the creative use of the Tibetan language.

Sholung: An Anthology of Tibetan Women's Voices
Sholung (bZho lung) is the first ever anthology of contemporary Tibetan women's writing to appear in any language. We are pleased that this historic collection gathers the voices of women writing exclusively in Tibetan. Through the efforts of editor and impresario, Palmo Tso, Sholong opened a new creative space for Tibetan women poets and essayists from across the plateau. The collection was published in 2005 with the financial support of Machik.  We are currently seeking support to translate this ground-breaking volume from Tibetan to English in order to build a wider audience for Tibetan women’s writing.

Snowland Tibetan Women's Journal
Machik supported the first ever women's quarterly magazine, Snowland Tibetan Women's Journal (Gangs can skyes ma'i tshags par). Edited and produced by Tibetan women, this magazine provides a unique and dynamic forum for Tibetan women writers to discuss compelling social issues such as the impact of HIV/AIDS on Tibetan women. Twelve issues have been produced since the journal was launched in December 2004.  Machik also sponsored the development of the first online space devoted to Tibetan women writers writing in Tibetan.

Feminist Translations
Through our Feminist Translations program, we are building stronger bridges among Tibetans and the global feminist community.  Already we have supported the translation of two pieces from English to Tibetan:
  • We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Adichie
  • Domestic Violence Phrasebook by the Asian Women’s Shelter, with ACHA Himalayan Sisterhood
Please contact us at [email protected] to learn more about this program and how you can contribute.
