Legacy Giving
This is the story of quiet heroes.
Around the world is a diverse group of people who have been energized and motivated to affect change based on the far-reaching nonprofit this couple inspired when they made an extraordinary decision.
Pencho and Tsering Rabgey are the cofounders of Machik in 1998. Pencho Rabgey was born in the 1930s in the forest mountains of eastern Tibet. From a family of farmers and pastoralists, he studied many years as a monk before making the difficult journey to India in 1959. Tsering Rabgey was born on the other side of the Tibetan plateau, in a farming village with Mount Everest on the horizon. They met in India and after starting a family, they moved to Canada seeking educational opportunities for their children. For years they worked in factories in Canada and created a Tibetan language home for their children who encouraged to focus on education and community service. Their story then took an unusual turn when together they decided to spend Pencho’s retirement savings on creating a mother-tongue based bilingual school for the children in his native village of Chungba in eastern Tibet. This decision inspired others to also invest in the future rural Tibetan children in Tibet.
Since then, Pencho and Tsering have remained steadfast in supporting Machik’s impact in education and mentorship for thousands of young people in Tibet and in diaspora. As conditions have changed over time, the work has also grown and pivoted while remaining based on the same values. Today, Machik has become a global organization committed to a stronger future for Tibet. Machik continues to convene new encounters, grow knowledge, and bridge cultural divides among Tibetans, Chinese and global citizens.
Pencho and Tsering have decided to invest in Machik’s future further by joining the Machik Legacy Circle which welcomes supporters to remember Machik in their estate planning. Making a legacy gift is another way to demonstrate your continued support of Machik’s values and goals. To join the Machik Legacy Circle, you can use the FreeWill tool, at no cost, to create an estate plan. We join Pencho and Tsering in inviting you to consider becoming a member of the Machik Legacy Circle at a level that is comfortable for you. Thank you in advance for your kind consideration as we hope you will support Tibet’s future by joining Machik Legacy Circle.
