Machik x Eaton Tibetan Film Series
Machik and Eaton House were pleased to present a series of six films made by and about people in Tibet. The year-long film series served as a platform to spotlight the power of storytelling by filmmakers in Tibet at that time. It was also an opportunity to delve deeper into the contemporary Tibetan experience and gain insight into the complexity of Tibet's land and people. The series included both feature and documentary films, all in Tibetan language with English subtitles. All films were screened at Eaton House. Films were free, and donations were welcome.

The film to kickoff the series was renowned filmmaker Pema Tseden's Sacred Arrow, a Tibetan love story about archery, expectations and the meaning of winning in a time of change. Learn more
The film follows the story of Wangdrak, a spirited and determined child in a mountain village in Tibet, who dreams of having rain boots like those of other children for maneuvering rain puddles on their way to school. Lhapal Gyal's touching début feature film is brilliant in its sensitive portrayal of a child's point of view. His film offers rare insight into friendships and the details of daily life in a rural community against breathtaking Tibetan landscapes.

The Valley of the Heroes by Khashem Gyal tells the story of an extraordinary effort to preserve Tibetan language in Hualong County in Amdo, Tibet. Over the past several decades, the Tibetans living there have experienced rapid cultural changes and marginalization. The film spends time with village residents and elders, as they reflect on the cultural and linguistic changes taking place in their community. It also documents a unique Tibetan language program attempting to revitalize the language heritage.
