Trailer: Summer Pasture
"Summer Pasture is a feature-length documentary that chronicles one summer with a young pastoral family living in the high grasslands of eastern Tibet. Locho, his wife Yama, and their infant daughter survive in the mountains by herding yak, much as their ancestors have for generations. In recent years, however, pastoral life has become increasingly difficult and now many pastoralists are settling in town. Soon, Locho and Yama will face the same predicament, when they must choose whether to raise their daughter in the pasture or send her school -- a decision that will have deep implications for their future as pastoralists.” (Kham Film Project)

The classic feature length film Summer Pasture, a Peabody-award winning feature documentary offers a thought-provoking glimpse into the life of a pastoral family in the heart of Tibet in a time of uncertain socio-economic transition.
This film is acclaimed for its "artful, dramatic, comedic, intimate portrait of a culture both unique and universal." Summer Pasture was a labor of love and empathy for the filmmaking team, Tsering Perlo, Lynn True and Nelson Walker. Based in the high pastures of Dzachuka, Kham, the film captures the struggles, as well as the philosophical awareness, of a young couple as new cultural and political worlds encroach upon their traditional way of life. Summer Pasture is a window into Tibetan gender relations and the status of women in Tibetan pastoralist cultures.
We are proud that director Tsering Perlo was the first recipient of a Machik Fellowship, a program supporting dynamic Tibetan changemakers dedicated to strengthening their communities in Tibet.
