Youth Leadership: Machik Weekend 2014
A portal to peace through the next generation.
Through events like the annual Machik Weekend and Machik Retreat, young Tibetans and Chinese are provided a forum to reflect as global citizens on their differences while also developing a shared sense of stake in a transformative future for Tibet. The effect of Machik’s youth leadership dialogues is to grow awareness about the daunting challenges in Tibet, while strengthening the commitment of young people to work toward sustainable peace and reconciliation through the project of civic engagement. Machik Weekend is an annual gathering that draws an array of outstanding young global citizens to meet, connect and discuss the challenges of service and engagement in the context of Tibet. The weekend features a day-long Machik Forum that involves roundtables and panels on current topics and issues. In 2014, the Machik Weekend was held in New York City where over 400 Tibetans, Chinese and global youth participated in the conversation. The fourth Machik Retreat was held in Marshall, Virginia to provide an opportunity for young Tibetans for intense discussion and exploration of the contentious Tibet issue.
