On 22 July, the Machik Community Screening was held at the University of Toronto in honor of the late Pema Tseden. The featured film was Balloon which was released in 2019, with the North American premiere having been held at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2019.
Balloon is a remarkable story about a rural Tibetan family contending with the collision of strongly held cultural norms, gender dynamics, population policies and reproductive rights. After the screening, there will be time for a discussion of the themes and insights sparked by the film. The community discussion session held after the screening extended to well over three hours after the film.
