Our team is in full swing preparing for the upcoming Machik Weekend 2013 (Nov. 9 & 10 in New York City!). This will be the 7th annual Machik Weekend and the first time in New York City. As with the production of Machik Weekend, so much of Machik’s work over the last 15 years has happened with the help of a host of volunteers and interns. To honor and thank the nearly 400 people who have given their time, expertise and spirit, we are creating a mobile monument! The names of all past and present volunteers will go on prayer flags that will decorate the venue for the forum at this year’s Machik Weekend. So loving crafts as I do, I set to work on making mini-sets of Machik prayer flags featuring all these many names…. It’s a long list and encouraging to see that so many people from all over the world have supported the cause of engaging Tibet.
The prayer flags seem like the perfect medium for Machik Weekend as the event will spread ideas and hopes for Tibetan issues across the country as fast as any lung ta རླུང་རྟ། could. The five colors of the flags represent the five elements of sky/space, wind, fire, water, and earth, and tie in well with the theme of environmentalism and staying grounded in ties to the Earth.
We hope you will have the chance to see all the work we’ve put into these prayer flags, and if your name is on one, we invite you to sign yours at Machik Weekend 2013!
