Machik Weekendx
At Machik Weekend in 2011, a young Tibetan participant had traveled from Connecticut to Washington, D.C. to participate. At the end of the weekend, he asked the founders if it would be possible to bring Machik Weekend to his community in Connecticut. Thus, Machik Weekendx (MWx) was founded when we organized a shorter version of Machik Weekend in Connecticut. Co-organized with the local Tibetan community, this event featured different speakers as well as a film screening by the Tibetan filmmaker Khashem Gyal who also joined the event from Tibet by Skype.
The second Machik Weekendx took place from April 18-20 in the Twin Cities, Minnesota. The MWx-MN offered the audience a glimpse into the vast array of projects currently happening inside Tibet, ranging from the realms of social enterprise, youth education, gender equity, environmental sustainability, critical research and policy reform. The conference kicked off with a community talk and dinner at the Tibetan American Foundation of Minnesota (TAFM) in St. Paul. The evening address was delivered by Machik Executive Director Dr. Losang Rabgey and Machik staff. The next day's Saturday forum featured talks by Dr. Yue Gang of University of North Carolina, Dr. Tashi Rabgey of George Washington University, Rhodes Scholar and Machik's Strategic Director, and Dr. Gartso Kyi of Qinghai Normal University, currently visiting scholar at Harvard, and Mingyur Paldon, graduate student at UC Berkeley. Other panelists included representatives from Minnesota's pioneering and impactful Lamton mentoring and tutoring program for local Tibetan youth and speakers from Machik's Summer Enrichment Program. On the third day, MWx-MN concluded with a screening of Kokonor, a 1 hour documentary about environmentalism, rural education and the effects of modernization at Tso Ngonpo (Qinghai Lake).
