Cornell University’s operation deep at SEP 2010

Since the 2009 Summer Enrichment Program (SEP), students from Cornell University’s Operation Developing Elementary Education Possibilities in China (DEEP ) have participated in SEP as volunteers. Here’s what some of the 2010 Operation DEEP volunteers had to say about their experience.

“The design and leadership of the program are truly phenomenal and foster an excellent supplementary learning experience for a very deserving group of students.” Matt Sellers is a student at Cornell University studying government.

“The most important aspect of SEP: the impact that we can see we’ve had on the kids’ self confidence. Whether they are boogying down in dance class, presenting in English class, or racing me on the track. I can personally feel the change in our students regardless of the activity. It’s tough work, but it’s also incredibly worthwhile.

One of my favorite moments was definitely teaching some of the dancers the word goofy (a personal favorite of mine). When they asked what it meant, I replied with a  joyful twirl in the air ending with the goofiest smile I could give. They understood.”

​Jade Mandel is a student at Cornell University studying economics and China Asia Pacific studies.

“We’ve really connected with the students; each of us in different ways. Some through dancing and sports, especially b-ball, some by using the one-on-one close setting in tutoring sessions, and still others by just always being attentive and smiling. I hope both the students and everyone else get to see that positive progress in each other and themselves along the way.”
