Honoring the Art of Tibetan Calligraphy
The Script of a Living Civilization

April 30, 2026
Join Machik's Celebration of the Tibetan Language
PLANET WORD, Washington DC

Join Machik and the Planet Word Museum on Thursday, April 30 from 10am to 5pm for a special celebration of Tibetan Calligraphy Day, an international day to honor one of the world's most enduring and expressive written traditions.

The Tibetan script is an ancient unifying system that has connected written knowledge, spirituality, and a shared identity across Tibet over a millennium. With many dialects spanning Tibet, the written script remains a standard.

For Machik, Tibetan Calligraphy Day is a time to express gratitude and respect for the spirit of preservation and dynamism of all past and present practitioners - calligraphers, scholars, teachers, and community members - both in Tibet and across the diaspora. Their work is for future generations.

The observance began in 2017 at the first International Tibetan Calligraphy Conference, held at the  Calligraphy Museum in Tsongon (མཚོ་སྔོན་), Tibet, when Tibetan language champions and specialists launched this annual celebration. The chosen date April 30 represents the 4 vowels and 30 letters of the Tibetan alphabet.

We will offer both a calligraphy exhibit and a hands-on workshops. The exhibit will feature calligraphic works from Tibet, loaned by Rongwo Lugyal (རོང་བོ་ཀླུ་རྒྱལ།), a Tibetan writer, editor, and translator from Rebgong (རེབ་གོང་). Lugyal's translations between English and Tibetan have appeared in literary journals, online, and in World Literature (འཛམ་གླིང་རྩོག་རིག་), a literary magazine published in Tibet.

Tenzin Dolma will lead the workshops on the art of Tibetan script, offering a chance to learn some Tibetan and try your hand at Tibetan calligraphy. The program is open to all levels of Tibetan learners.
