International Women’s Day
In honor of International Women’s Day, we’re happy to share the story of one remarkable young Tibetan woman from a remote part of Tibet.
Chime Lhamo was born into a humble family in Chungba — a typical one which, like so many other households in rural Tibet, had no electricity or running water. In 2002, she became part of the historic first class of the Chungba Primary School. Last year, after shining all the way through primary, middle and high school, Chime Lhamo became the #1 student on the college entrance exams (gaokao) across all Tibetan-language schools in a region of about 1.5 million Tibetans.
Like her other outstanding peers in the first class of the Chungba Primary School, Chime Lhamo has been part of Machik programs throughout her entire education — learning the values of service and community responsbility all along the way.
Today, Chime Lhamo is enrolled in the first-ever bilingual law program in Beijing (in Tibetan and Chinese) and we could not be more excited to see what she will do in the years to come.
Machik’s Women’s Initiatives offers not only financial support, but also mentorship, ongoing communication and the long term commitment that creates the confidence for these women and girls to reach for new expectations.
In this way, we stand with these bright and determined women for their stronger futures. We believe that empowered Tibetan women will create a better future for all Tibetans.
To learn more about Machik’s Women’s Initiatives, watch this short video of Mother’s Wish, a project that began as an annual walk in Washington DC and is now a Tibetan-led NGO in Amdo that has supported over 2000 women and girls through middle school, high school and university.
