Beating the Odds
This year marks the fulfillment of a promise. Twelve years have passed since we first opened the Chungba Primary School. Against the many odds, the students of that first class of Chungba students are now college students, teachers, civil servants and budding entrepreneurs. We wanted to share with you some of the astonishing accomplishments of that first-ever class of Chungba students graduating from high school — like their 90% graduating rate, or that 69% are continuing with postsecondary education, or that 53% are young women (results below).
To top it off, this first-ever graduating Chungba class has produced the #1-ranked entering college student from all the Tibetan-based high schools from across Ganzi and Aba Tibetan Autonomous Prefectures — a region of well over a million Tibetans (congratulations to Chime Lhamo, now studying law in Beijing – soon to become the first generation of Tibetan lawyers trained to practice bilingually in both Tibetan and Chinese!) Through mentorship, ongoing communication and long term financial commitment, we have offered these rural Tibetan students not just resources, but a new expectation — an expectation that they too can succeed, whether in school or in leading creative and empowered lives.
At Machik, we believe it is this expectation of Tibetan agency and empowerment that will create a better future for all Tibetans.
In 2015, we will continue our commitment to Tibetan rural education through the Chungba High School Campaign and the Khelen Fund, our Tibetan college scholarship fund.
