Machik Camp 2009

Machik Camp_dsc3601Machik Camp 2009 provided a unique opportunity for young Tibetans from the US and Canada to learn about new approaches toward civic engagement in Tibet.  The four-day workshop and retreat offered a forum for young Tibetans to connect with academics, professionals and other specialists either working in Tibet or in the field of social entrepreneurship globally.

The inaugural event was part of Machik's program mission to build greater understanding of conditions in Tibet today and to expand awareness of the urgent need for capacity-building in local communities.  Participants were introduced to an array of locally-initiated grassroots service projects that have succeeded and brought tangible benefits to struggling Tibetan communities.

"At Machik Camp I was exposed to new ideas and new people. Not only did I learn about the importance of building capacity and empowering Tibetans in Tibet, I had the opportunity to discuss these issues with other young Tibetans from both inside and outside Tibet. I left Machik Camp with a more nuanced understanding of the many challenges we face in Tibet, a new network of passionate and inspiring young Tibetans, and a renewed sense of hope for the future of Tibet."

 - Pema McGuinness, Machik Camp participant

The four-day event also created an opportunity for young Tibetans to explore underlying socio-economic and institutional dimensions of the broader Tibet issue.  In providing a platform for the in-depth consideration of these pressing issues and by offering perspectives on forging new pathways toward engagement, Machik Camp seeks to serve as a forum for deliberation and discussion for the next generation of leaders in the global Tibetan community.
